Memorial Day Celebration

Memorial Weekend

Watch for a flyer in your mailbox with full details. You can count on good food, great company and a fun time !! Be part of the events as we celebrate summer's arrival and the Re-opening of our Swimming Pool !!

Updates from the Board

We have several items to report, including updates to priorities from Dave Brintzinghoffer in our January 21, 2004 BHP Voice Newsletter:

·         The Township received our street light proposal and has already installed several more lights in our BHP community.

·         Four residents are registered to attend Certified Pool Operations (CPO) training in April & May, a first step for more flexible swimming pool hours (likely without lifeguards). Our thanks to Dorothy & Bob Jackson, John Gabriel and Herb Cunitz, who will then help us uphold NJ regulations.

·         The Neighborhood Watch program, with almost 40 members, has had four meetings & established a structure.  Besides now keeping a watchful eye on our properties, this group is considering handling the current process of routinely inspecting the BHP HOA Clubhouse/Pool facility.

·         We now have a procedure to include new homeowners into our private Information Directory of names, addresses, phone #s and e-mail IDs.  However, we must re-canvass current owners to complete our data needs.

·         Several residents have expressed interest in our “Adopt a Highway” program to keep the BHP community litter-free, and to also improve the look, feel and usefulness of our BHP common areas.

·         KHOV replaced & upgraded the treadmills in our Fitness Room.

·         Meetings have begun to investigate energy conservation ideas.

You can view much more information on our BHP web site at “BHP-HOA.COM”.  The BHP Director and Committee members continue to ask for your involvement by picking an event or a priority action item --- then call those already involved to truly become active.  Look at the items above and become an even more integral part of our growing BHP community.

Call (965-2301) or e-mail CTDEUTSCH@ATT.NET with questions/comments.

Recreation Committee

So, you think your social life at Blue Heron Pines is busy, well you “ain’t seen nothing yet!” !! Your Recreation Committee is pleased that you seem to like the planned activities. We thank all those who organized & participated already in so many events.

Rosemary Metzen, Chairperson, had asked at the recent Homeowner’s Meeting if any residents would be interested in joining the Committee.  She is pleased to announce that both Peg & Ron Huber are joining.  In addition, Rosemary knew that spouses of REC Committee members have been vital in support, so why not make them actual members to bring new ideas and energy. So, meet your new slate of REC Committee members:

Marie & George Anglim--Sally & Bill Deutsch-- Peg & Ron Huber-- Rosemary & John Metzen--Mary Ann & Jay McCoog-- Judy & Bill Reilly--Nadine & John Valek

If there are any other residents who would be interested in joining the REC Committee or who wish to chair one of the many events we will be planning, please contact Rosemary at 965-6463 or email: rmetzen@worldnet.att.net.  You can go to our web site at BHP-HOA.COM for more info, but a brief synopsis of our REC news follows:

New treadmills replaced the originals, are much superior & thanks for your patience.

Wonderful Gourmet Dinner events so far: Holiday Brunch, romantic Valentine’s Dinner and recently, the Spring Dinner. Many of you have graciously volunteered your homes; wonderful dinners have been enjoyed with each evening concluding at our Clubhouse for dessert.  Special thanks to Coordinators, Marie & George, Judy & Bill and Chris Goggin & Ray Parker.  Luau at Clubhouse/Pool, June 12--mark calendars.

Our Wine Tasting Parties have been a wonderful success: January chaired by Rosemary & John and Maurice & Jane Shepherd, then in March chaired by Ed & Meg Williams and Sherri & Joe Davies. On May 22, Joanne & John Gabriel are planning Italian wines with a guest expert --- recommend you sign-up early.

We are planning a Memorial Day Pool Opening Party (similar to last year’s July 4th celebration).  Watch for a mailbox flyer, and then join the fun.

Submit your BHP Cookbook recipes soon, so you do not miss out on the special “cook-off event”. Contact Mary O’Hara, Chairperson (804-9547).

Call Gloria Charmuras at -------, if you are interested in the Singles Group.

Monday afternoon Mah Jong has been a fun activity and the monthly Book Discussion Group, thanks to Chairperson Marie Anglim. Men card games continue Thursday nights.

The Trips and Travel sub-committee had a successful trip to Philly and Baltimore in September is sold out.  Contact Mary Ann McCoog (804-1922) with ideas.

Sandy Regenye and Chris Goggin did a wonderful job in presenting a skin care seminar for our BHP women.  Another event may be planned in future.

Call Jay McCoog (804-1922) for the rummage sale on April 24, Sat., 8 am to 12 Noon in our Clubhouse parking lot. Tables cost $10 to benefit REC activities & to get supplies.

2004 New Year’s Eve Gala – even better (if that’s possible) than 2003 at BHP Golf Club West.  Contact Mary Jane Coster, Jane Barrett or Rosemary to help us.

New activities to watch for:  A Dance Party with dance instructors; a Bunco Group; Bowling Parties; a White Elephant Party, just to name a few.

You ever think what it takes to get an event flyer into your mailbox --- much work & coordination --- think about tasks: first develop the event plan; organize people, create flyer; get copies made; deliver --- and then, finally execute actual event tasks. REC Committee members have walked and delivered flyers but the # of homes is growing, so we are attempting to recruit & deliver by BHP location sections.  During the past, cold winter months, we appreciate John Metzen hanging out of George Anglim’s truck to make many deliveries --- if you want to help, then please contact us.

Participate ---- review items above and just give one of the people mentioned a call now.

Message from Chris Arabio - General Manager

It was a pleasure to speak with so many homeowners at the recent HOA meeting at the golf club.  I saw a lot of heads nod in agreement each time the notion of “lifestyle” was mentioned in reference to the desires of the Blue Heron Pines community.  Additionally, there was much agreement to the thought that, as neighbors, we share a mutual commitment to making that lifestyle a reality.

Blue Heron Pines Golf Club offers many unique opportunities for the surrounding community to enjoy a “club lifestyle.”  From daily golf and lunch to Friday Night Happy Hour to special HOA tournaments and dinners, the club assumes its dynamic role in the happiness and satisfaction of its neighbors.

As homeowners, you are cordially invited to join such clubs and activities as the Ladies’ Golf Association, the Rewards Club, evening golf clinics and expanded membership at Blue Heron Pines.  Many activities at Blue Heron Pines are priced specially for homeowners to encourage participation and confirm our commitment to your enjoyment.

Please take advantage of all that the club offers.  You’ll be glad you did.  Together we’ll continue to realize the community spirit and cohesiveness that each of us desires from Blue Heron Pines.

Kevin Shaw, Head Pro

Welcome to the 2003 Golf season.

We have already started off with some excitement with Phil Mickelson winning the Masters. This was a well deserved, and long awaited Major victory for Phil, and it came with some hard to make changes. He made an extremely tough decision to change his aggressive plan of attack when playing in this years Masters and it paid off big time. This was not the easiest change for him to make and I’m sure there were shots where he had to fight back his natural aggressive tendencies. But he did. And he won. My point is that this is usually the time we make changes in our games and as tough as it is to stick with them, stick with them we must, in order to achieve the results we want.

When you are with Bob Lennon or one of our other Professionals and the change you are asked to make feels uncomfortable or not what you think is correct, stick with it. Change takes time. All changes. Give it time and I’m sure you will get closer to your goals and be on your way to being a better player.

Speaking of change, the Rules of Golf have a number of changes this year and if you are a rules junkie like me, you will enjoy reading them. If you have any questions on the rules or any thing else regarding the game pf golf, stop by. We would love to see you. Good Golf. Kevin.

Meet Your Neighbors

Ed & Meg  Proximity to the ocean and accessibility to golfing and great shopping were at the top of Ed & Meg’s wish list when they began their search for a new home and future place of retirement.  While they have found their dream home, they’ll have to wait a few years to start enjoying their retirement plans and to let the real fun begin.  Ed & Meg came to us from Reading, PA, however, grew up in Philadelphia.  They also spent some time living in New Jersey and Connecticut.  They met while both working for the Insurance Company of America in Philadelphia, and in one of life’s blinking moments now find themselves married for 30 years.  They have one daughter, Adrienne, who lives in Annapolis, MD and has provided the Williams’ with two beautiful grandchildren.

Ed is currently employed by Pitney Bowes as a sales manager, while Meg works with computers in information systems management at Ocean City Home Bank.  Amazingly, each career is fitting of their individual personality.   At the March wine tasting event, many of us became aware of Ed’s outgoing personality and deep, majestic voice as he was the Master of Ceremonies for the night.  Ed is a people person and enjoys the interaction.  Meg on the other hand prefers to stay out of the limelight and enjoys doing anything that keeps her in the house.  As you can guess, Ed agreed to this neighbor interview without Meg’s knowledge. Gotcha Meg!  Both enjoy golf, and Ed hopes to travel to Scotland one day to test his skills on the links.  Ed is also looking forward to having more time to dabble in painting.  No, not the interior house painting type that we’re all familiar with, but real artworks using water colors and acrylics.  And like a splash of vibrant color on a fresh canvas, Ed and Meg are great additions to our budding BHP community.

Tom and Anna

Tom and Anna moved to our community of Blue Heron Pines from Hewitt, NJ on Greenwood Lake. They have three children Jonathan (23) who is an Engineering student at RIT, Michelle (25) a veterinarian technician in Northern NJ and Kim (20) a professional photographer who currently lives at home. Tom has had several careers but most recently retired from E.D.S. (Electronic Data Systems) after 21 years. Anna has been the homemaker and resident landscape artist.

Tom and Anna are very active in several community activities. Tom of course plays golf and Anna has just started taking lessons. They are avid motorcyclist and currently own two (Honda 2003 GoldWingd and a Suzuki 2002V-Strom). Some of their other interests include boating, fishing, and travel. Anna loves to kayak and is hoping to find someone who shares the same interest. Tom prefers to build them and has a handmade 17 African Mahogany Merganser.

Tom spends a good deal of time on the computer daily and is regularly researching some project or stock interest.

Tom & Anna can be reached at tmoore01@comcast.net and annakmoore@comcast.net and look forward to meeting new neighbors.

Maurice and Jane It has been said that within our past lies our future.  This saying is evident in the story of Maurice and Jane Shepherd.  During Memorial Day weekend, 1955, they met for the first time on the beach in Ocean City, NJ.  It was love at first sight as they were engaged in December of 1955, and married on May 19, 1956.   Incredibly, they are now approaching their 48th wedding anniversary!

The Shepherd’s came to BHP from Mt. Laurel, NJ where they lived for 34 years.  Maurice (aka, Shep) and Jane are both retired and enjoying all that BHP and the surrounding area has to offer.  Maurice retired in 2002 after working for UNISYS for 30 years.  Maurice was one of the pioneers in the information technology (IT) field, and was the Director of Public Sector Marketing upon his retirement.  Jane worked in the secretarial field for the RCA record division up until the birth of their second child.   They have two children, Jo Ann and Kurt, and 3 grandchildren.  However, you might say that they have three children since they acted as the U.S. parents for a Japanese boy, Shinichiro Alban Sato, from the age of 14 until he received his post graduate MBA from American University.  The boy’s father is an Episcopalian priest and met Maurice and Jane while they were visiting Maurice’s brother in Guam.  Shortly thereafter, they received a letter from the priest asking the Shepherd’s to be the boy’s parents while he attended school in the U.S.  The Shepherd’s agreed and were “Mom Jane” and “Mr. Maurice” for 11 years.  This is just one example of the kindness typical of the Shepherd’s.

Maurice and Jane keep themselves busy with involvement in several clubs and travel.  They have traveled extensively and enjoyed most their trips to Japan, Ireland, Hawaii and Italy.  They participate in many of the BHP activities, and are still involved in a Pinochle club and a Dinner club from their days in Mt. Laurel.  BHP is fortunate to have the Shepherd’s in our community as they were one of the founding members of the wine tasting group.  The Shepherd’s led the first ever wine tasting event at BHP, continue to help coordinate the forthcoming wine events, and share their wine experience to all who participate.  The Shepherd’s are delightful people to visit and they offered this guest interviewer excellent wine to go with pleasant and enjoyable conversation.

It is now almost 50 years since Maurice and Jane first met on the beach in Ocean City.   Inspired by their past, they are back to the area where their hearts became one.  The BHP community is fortunate to share in their future.
